Xylitol toxicity is dangerous and can be fatal for Fido. Never give Fido any hard candies, gums or mints as many if not the majority of these include Xylitol as an ingredient. This is especially true for gums and mints and nearly all “sugarless” hard candies. As little as 0.001 lbs of Xylitol is enough to be toxic to a 10 lb dog. In other words, 3 pieces of sugarless gum are enough to be fatal to a 10lb Yorkie. 7 pieces for a 30 lb Border Collie. 15 pieces for a 70 lb Labrador.
Most people are familiar with the ban on anything chocolate though chocolate isn’t quite as toxic as Xylitol. Still, it’s always best to play it safe and never Let Fido have anything with chocolate either.
Finally, the last common Halloween ingredient to avoid is anything containing raisins. Be wary of trail mix, nut bars and cookies.
Note that one of the differences between Xylitol and either chocolate or raisins is that Xylitol as an ingredient is invisible. Whereas, most uses of chocolate or raisins as ingredients are obvious. The general rule of thumb is never let Fido have anything sweet unless you have access to the list of ingredients and Xylitol, chocolate and raisins are all not in the list. Avoiding the extra calories is a plus and will help Fido keep slim, trim and fit!
