What is World Animal Day?
This day is an internationally recognized day to promote animal health, treatment and care.
How did World Animal Day originate?
Heinrich Zimmermann, the German writer and publisher of the magazine: Mensch und Hund (Man and Dog) organized the first World Animal Day on March 24, 1925. The day was originally scheduled for October 4 to align with the feast day for Saint Francis of Assisi, patron saint of ecology. However, the original venue was not available for that day. World Animal Day was moved to October 4 in 1929. The day was accepted as an International event in May 1931 at the International Animal Protection Congress in Florence, Italy.
What kinds of events are promoted?
Look for awareness and educational events, shelter open days, pet adoption events, animal blessing services, spay & neutering clinics and more. Local notices can be found in your local paper or by searching the Internet.
