After the Hurricane - Dos and Donts

The hurricane is over and you’ve gotten back home with Fido and Felicia. Here are the dos and donts to keep your four legged family members safe.

  • Don’t let your pets out yet!!

  • Check your home for damages. If damage is present, check for sharp objects like broken glass, splinters, nails, unexpected wildlife, spilled chemicals or any other hazards.

  • Once your home is safe, you can let Fido and Felicia loose inside. Do not let them outside just yet. You need to make sure your yard is ‘pet safe’ before letting your pets out unsupervised.

  • For now, only walk Fido outside on a leash.

  • Just like your home, check your yard for sharp objects, unexpected wildlife, spilled chemicals, and other hazards.

  • Thoroughly clean/rake your yard. You especially want to keep a sharp eye out for small carcasses like dead frogs, small reptiles, snakes or rodents. Also be sure to clean out all downed branches. Here in Florida, this particularly important if there are any avocado trees in the area.

  • Be sure that all outdoor areas where your would let Fido or Felicia out are enclosed and that there are no breaks or holes in your fencing.

  • Re-establish a normal routine with your pets as soon as possible. Disruption in your pet’s life can be one of the largest causes of stress.

  • Allow your pet to sleep as much as they want to speed recovery from trauma or stress.

  • Comfort each other! Petting and snuggling together is good both for you and your pet.

  • If your pet hasn’t had anything to eat for several days, start with small servings and gradually work up to full servings over several days.

  • If you see any signs of illness, pain, discomfort or continued stress, schedule a visit with your vet for a checkup.

Be safe and take care!

Feedback from our clients

  • "I just moved here, and had appointments for my 2 dogs with Dr Gary. He is amazing with my dogs. They both were relaxed, which they have never been during vet visits! Dr Gary and his staff obviously know animals well, and gave me great suggestions for some behavior problems I was having. His suggestions have worked wonders. I am so happy to have found this vet, as I know my 2 dogs will always have the best of care with Dr Gary and his staff! Highly recommend!"
